Srinagar, January 25, 2013 (PPI-OT): In occupied Kashmir, the authorities have beefed up the so-called security in the Kashmir Valley ahead of Indian Republic Day, to be observed on Saturday, intensifying the searches and frisking.
Additional police and paramilitary personnel have been deployed in Srinagar. Indian police has set up barricades at many places to carry out searches of vehicles entering the city. The roads around the Bakhshi stadium, the venue for main function, had been sealed. Indian troops and police personnel in civvies have been deployed around the stadium to keep an eye on the movement of people.
Similar arrangements have been put in place in all major towns of the occupied territory. The Indian police and paramilitary personnel at many places in Srinagar and other towns could be seen carrying out through frisking of light vehicles. The documents of bikes were also being checked.
A senior police officer told media men in Srinagar that the forces were conducting searches of vehicles. He said that sharp shooters would remain deployed on high-rise buildings while a close watch would be maintained through Close Circuit Cameras (CCC) installed in Srinagar.
Meanwhile, full dress rehearsal of the Republic Day parade was held at the Bakhshi stadium amidst tight security. The police have rounded up several youth from many areas of Srinagar to prevent anti-India protests on the day.
