GOVT DECIDES TO CONDUCT INQUIRY INTO AHMADPUR SHARQIA TRAGEDY

Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif says a proper inquiry into Ahmedpur East oil tanker fire tragedy will be conducted to ascertain facts.

Speaking at the site of tragedy in Ahmedpur East today, he said inquiry is indispensable to avert such incidents in future.

The Prime Minister said the inquiry will look into as to what was the condition of the oil tanker and what was the responsibility of the company owning the tanker.

He said the auspicious occasion of Eidul Fitr has turned into grief due to the unfortunate incident.

Nawaz Sharif regretted that some elements on the media used the occasion for politics.

Our Radio Pakistan Bahawalpur Correspondent Sajjad Parvez reports that Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif along with Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif met with the relatives of the departed souls to console them and to share their grief and loss.

On this occasion Prime Minister distributed compensation cheques of two million rupees to the legal heirs of those who died in the incident while one million rupees to the injured persons.

He said this compensation cannot be substitute for a human life but is aimed at reducing the difficulties of the affected families.

He also announced provision of government jobs for all injured persons after their recovery and heirs of departed souls.

Earlier soon after his arrival in Bahawalpur today, Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif was given a detailed briefing about Ahmadpur Sharqia oil tanker tragedy.

Commissioner Bahawalpur Saqib Zafar apprised the Prime Minister about the tragedy and the relief activities.

He said that the tanker on its way to Bahawalpur from Karachi was carrying twenty five thousand litre of oil when it overturned in Ahmadpur Sharqia.

As the people rushed to the site to collect oil, the tanker exploded engulfing two hundred and sixty five people.

This resulted in the death of one hundred and fifty two people and injuries to one hundred and twenty five others.

The Prime Minister directed that best possible medical treatment should be provided to the injured.
