Govt Pledges to Enhance Transparency and Consumer Protection in Sugar Sector

Islamabad: Minister for National Food Security and Research Rana Tanveer Hussain has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to promote transparency, fair pricing, and consumer protection. He was chairing a follow-up meeting in Islamabad with sugar mill owners and key stakeholders to ensure transparency and stability in the sugar sector.

According to Radio Pakistan, it was agreed during the meeting that a mutually approved third-party audit firm will be hired to conduct an independent audit of sugar production costs. This step is aimed at ensuring transparency in the determination of production expenses and price setting, thereby creating a fair and data-driven pricing framework for the future.

The Minister appreciated the positive gesture by the sugar mills, which agreed to reduce ex-mill prices of sugar temporarily till Eid-ul-Azha to provide immediate relief to consumers. It was further agreed that a new pricing formula, based on the audit results and mutual consultation, will be finalized after Eid.
