Health sector to be given top priority in next budget: Info Minister

Karachi, May 18, 2020 (PPI-OT): Sindh Information Minister Syed Nasir Hussain Shah has said that the major focus of the Sindh government in the forthcoming budget would be on the health sector. The provincial information minister said that in view of the situation emerged after the outbreak of the coronavirus, PPP chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari had also asked the Sindh Chief Minister to give priority to the health sector in the forthcoming budget.

He said that although the Sindh government had done a lot of work in the health sector in the past, but in the aftermath of the spread of the coronavirus, there was a need to focus more on the that sector. Shah said that there were already a lot of achievements of Sindh government regarding the improvement in the health sector which included the upgradation of all the basic health units, district health units, as well as the extension in National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases in other districts, along with the use of cyber knife technology to treat cancer patients.

The provincial information minister said that besides this, the Sindh government was also constantly supporting the Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation in which people not only from Sindh but also from all over the country come for treatment. He said that Sindh government had always been trying to provide maximum facilities to the poor in the health sector. Shah further said that it was also wrong to say that the Sindh government focused only on major cities in terms of providing facilities.

He said that this was not the case at all, because now the branches of National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases, as well as, Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation had also been opened in other districts of Sindh besides Karachi. Giving further examples, he said that in Gambit Institute of Medical Sciences, which was located in Gambat, liver transplantation was being performed.

The provincial minister said that he was not claiming that everything was fine with regard to health facilities in rural areas of Sindh, but he said that now things were very different and there had been a lot of improvement in health facilities situated in the rural areas of the province. Shah said that the Sindh government was of the view that, improving health facilities in rural areas would reduce the pressure on the health facilities in major cities.

The provincial minister said that this was the reason why the Sindh government had paid so much attention in improving health facilities in the rural areas, adding that, now people had access to the best treatment facilities in their neighbourhood.

He said that the recruitment of doctors was also being done with the same thinking that they should be recruited with the condition that they would serve at lead for three years in rural areas. Shah said that the doctors who had been recruited on contract basis to look after the patients of coronavirus would be posted at the health facilities in the rural areas of Sindh after seeing their performances.

Describing further about the health facilities in Sindh province, he further said that not only a huge cancer hospital was being built in Sukkur, but also alike in Karachi, a huge centre of Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation was being built in Sukkur. He said that these two major health facilities of Sindh province which would benefit millions of people of Sindh were being fully funded by the government of Sindh.
