Higher Education Commission sponsors Seven Young Scholars to Attend Lindau Nobel Laureates Meeting

Islamabad, June 28, 2012 (PPI-OT): As many as seven young Pakistani scholars have been selected to attend the prestigious 62nd Lindau Nobel Laureates meeting in Germany, which will be held in Lindau (Germany)from July 1-6, 2012 in the subject of Physics.

Out of 60 applicants, seven graduates having excellent academic record have been finally selected to attend the meeting. The successful graduates include Irfan Muhammad Irfan, Kalsoom Rahim, Usman Hasan, Ambreen Uzair, Syed Ali Hussain, Muhammad Noman-ul-Haq and Sumera Yameen. The delegation will be led by Dr. N. M. Butt, renowned scientist and former Director General, PINSTECH.

These young scholars along with Dr. N. M. Butt and Dr. Mutawarra Hussain called on Dr. Javaid R. Laghari, Chairperson HEC at Commission Secretariat on Thursday.

The Chairperson congratulated the selected young scholars for participation in a prestigious international forum. “Since HEC has facilitated research and development activities in the universities through provision of physical and technological infrastructure as well as qualified faculty, it is expected that our scholars will work hard to achieve greater heights like winning Nobel prizes,” he said.

Since 1951, the one-week annual meetings of Nobel Laureates, by annual rotation in Physics, Chemistry and Medicine/Physiology are held in Lindau , Germany. Every year, 500-600 young scholars from over 60 countries attend the meeting where 15-20 Nobel Laureates inspire these young scholars through informal interactions by delivering lectures on contemporary science topics, panel discussions as well as face-to-face discussions. The purpose of these meetings is to create knowledge through interaction of Nobel Laureates with young scholars and bring inter-cultural harmony among graduates from different nations.

After the first-time initiative of Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission in 2003, HEC has been actively supporting this unique activity of great scientific inspiration. The graduates of first-class academic career are selected through a very transparent mechanism of a Selection Board of 6 eminent scientists of Pakistan including officials of HEC and German Embassy.

The quality of Pakistani students and their performance in Lindau meetings in the past years since 2003 has been described by the organizers of the meeting in Germany as “excellent and graduates of high quality from Pakistan”.

Because of the high-quality of students participating in the past years, Pakistan is respected in this unique science forum in the world. The German Embassy has been supporting this activity by facilitating grating visas to these graduates.
