In order to keep pace with international scientific developments, Pakistan has to allocate at least one percent of its total GDP for progress of science and technology in the country up to 2015

Islamabad: This was stated by the Federal Minister for Science and Technology Mir Changez Khan Jamali while chairing a meeting with a delegation from Planning Commission led by Dr. Nadeemul Haq.

During the meeting, the Minister expressed his dissatisfaction upon the slow releases of Fund for the on-going development projects.

The Minister appraised the delegation that without adequate release of funds in time, the projects of the Ministry are facing enormous difficulties.

Earlier the Federal Secretary for Science and Technology Mr. Akhlaq Ahmad Tarar briefed the delegation about the progress of the projects.

The delegation led by Deputy Chairman Planning Commission Nadeem ul Haq was told that among 51 approved developmental projects, 46 development projects are in progress 18 among these worth above Rs.100 million, and 28 worth Rs.100 million.

The Secretary said that the projects that were planned to be completed within 24 months are still under progress for the last 7 years.

At present, in actual nearly 80 percent projects of Ministry of Science and Technology are facing inflation and price hike, piling liabilities and litigation, he added.

The Ministry urged the Planning Commission for approval of additional allocation of Rs. 200 million in the current financial year for the clearance of the accrued liabilities. And for the next financial year indicative budget ceiling may be enhanced from Rs. 1200 million to Rs. 2000 million.

The Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission Dr. Nadeem ul Haq expressed satisfaction on the progress of the ongoing development projects of the ministry. However, he reiterated that the PCSIR and other organizations of the ministry may be revitalized through structural reforms.

It was also highlighted in the meeting that the Prime Minister directive for the special pay scale is required to be implemented as it is pending with the Finance Division.

In the delegation, Dr. Samar Mubarak Mand and Secretary, Planning Commission, Mr. Asif Bajwa were also present.
