India admits civilians were killed in Machil fake encounter

Srinagar, May 06, 2015 (PPI-OT): The Indian Defence Ministry has admitted that Army headquarters has received 19 cases of human rights violations against troops in occupied Kashmir during the past three years. In a written reply the Ministry informed the Indian parliament that it had got 19 complaints pertaining to custodial killings, rape, torture and enforced disappearances against Army personnel in the territory since 2012. The Ministry said that disciplinary action was taken against 14 Army personnel involved in Machil fake encounter in 2010.

“Pursuant to newspaper reports about killing of innocent civilians in an operation launched in general area Katwari Forest (Kalaroos-Machil Sector, J and K) from 30.04.2010 to 02.05.2010, a Court of Inquiry was ordered and subsequently disciplinary actions have been taken against 14 Army personnel,” the reply stated.

In 2010, Army had claimed of killing three foreign militants in the Machil sector of Kupwara. However, the men were later identified as Shahzad Ahmad Khan, Riyaz Ahmad Lone and Muhammad Shafi Lone, all residents of Baramulla district.
