New Delhi, May 02, 2023 (PPI-OT):The Indian Supreme Court has dismissed an appeal filed by Delhi Police against granting of bail to student activists Devangana Kalita, Natasha Narwal and Asif Iqbal Tanha in connection to the 2020 anti-Muslim riots in the Indian capital. The apex court in July 2021 had pointed out its reluctance to consider cancellation of the bail granted to the three activists, who were booked under black law, Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). On Tuesday, a bench headed by Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul told the Indian government’s counsel that there is a limit to seeking adjournment and added that the victims have been enlarged on bail for two years and it finds no reason to keep this matter alive.
It is to mention here that massive anti-Muslim riots had erupted in New Delhi in February 2020 after Hindu fanatics backed by the Delhi police had attacked the demonstrators protesting in the Indian capital against the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) enacted by the Narendra Modi-led fascist Indian government. The CAA had deprived hundreds of thousands of members of minority communities, particularly Muslims, of the citizenship right. The communal riots had resulted in the killing of 53 people, majority of them Muslims, and injuring of more than 700 others.
