Indian Wrestler Antim Panghal Deported from Paris Olympics Following Disciplinary Breach

Paris: Indian wrestler Antim Antim Panghal and her staff have been deported from the 2024 Paris Olympics due to a disciplinary breach, marking a significant embarrassment for India at the international event.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) issued an official statement confirming the deportation. The incident follows closely on the heels of another setback for India in women’s wrestling, where Vinesh Phogat was disqualified from the final for being slightly overweight, costing India a potential medal.

The IOA detailed that Panghal was not in the Games Village as required but had instead gone to a hotel where her coach, Bhagat Singh, and sparring partner, Vikas, were staying. This breach of protocol led to further complications when her sister, attempting to retrieve Panghal’s belongings from the Games Village, was caught impersonating her and subsequently detained for questioning.

Adding to the controversies, there was an altercation involving Panghal’s support staff and a Parisian cab driver. Reports indicated that the coaches, Bhagat Singh and Vikas, were intoxicated and refused to pay the cab fare, which escalated to police involvement.

An IOA official lamented the series of incidents, emphasizing the challenges they posed for the team management, stating, “We have left to fight fire.”
