Internet remains cut off in Maharashtra’s Akola to keep riots from spreading to other parts

Akola, May 16, 2023 (PPI-OT): Internet continues to remain suspended in riots-hit Maharashtra’s Akola district to keep violence from spreading to other areas of the Indian state, where several private and government buildings and vehicles have been burnt in the riots, so far. The violence was triggered by controversial social media posts by Hindutva elements against a minority community quickly resulting in slogan-shouting, stone-pelting and arson on Sunday.

To quell the rampaging mobs, Akola Superintendent of Police Sandeep M. Ghuge said, the Collector Nima Arora had clamped Prohibitory orders and ban on carrying any weapon in the town that saw violent burning of several vehicles, including two fire brigade vans and attempts to torch homes in Rajarajeshwar Setu of Harihar Peth locality. “So far we have arrested more than 100 people in connection with the rioting and further investigations are underway,” added Ghuge, with a heavy police force keeping a strong vigil in the town.
