Islamabad: The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), in collaboration with the National Commission on the Status of Women (NCSW) and the Global System for Mobile Communication (GSMA), hosted a crucial one-day workshop titled “Bridging the Mobile Gender Gap” at the PTA’s Headquarters. This initiative brought together key stakeholders to tackle the digital gender divide and enhance women’s access to mobile technology and digital services in Pakistan.
According to Pakistan Telecommunication Authority announcement issued on 06 August 2024, the workshop saw participation from various governmental and private entities, including the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecom, Ministry of Federal Education and Professional Training, and others. Discussions centered on developing strategies to foster a supportive ecosystem for gender inclusivity in ICTs, with a focus on policy creation and community engagement.
Chairman PTA, Maj. Gen. (R) Hafeez Ur Rehman, highlighted the workshop as a foundational step towards mitigating the digital gender divide, marking the commencement of a journey towards a more inclusive digital future in Pakistan. Nilofar Bakhtiar, former Federal Minister for Women Development and Ex-Chair of NCSW, delivered the keynote address, emphasizing the importance of digital inclusion for women as a catalyst for economic and social advancement.
Julian Gorman, Head of APAC GSMA, discussed the application of global expertise to devise solutions tailored to enhance female empowerment and inclusion in Pakistan’s digital landscape. The event also featured interactive sessions where participants reviewed best practices and successful international case studies aimed at empowering women through mobile technology.
The workshop concluded with the distribution of certificates to attendees and the presentation of shields to officials from GSMA and NCSW, celebrating the collaborative efforts toward bridging the mobile gender gap in Pakistan.
