Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry for Citizen Police Liaison Committee’s autonomy – Siraj Teli, Iftikhar Vohra urge authorities not to shift Citizen Police Liaison Committee to and under Central Police Office

Karachi, June 04, 2015 (PPI-OT): Chairman Businessmen Group Siraj Kassam Teli and President of the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI), Iftikhar Ahmed Vohra, while expressing deep concern over the decision to shift the office of Citizen Police Liaison Committee (CPLC) at Central Police Office (CPO), urged the authorities not to shift CPLC to and under CPO as the basic objective of setting up CPLC, which was to play the role of a bridge between the citizens and police, will surely be lost forever.

In a statement issued, BMG Chairman Siraj Teli and President KCCI Iftikhar Vohra stressed that CPLC, which was set up more than two decades ago in 1989 to maintain liaison between citizens and police, should be 100 percent neutral and independent without any political or government interference in order to serve the public in distress.

They were of the view that CPLC should only be led by a civilian with complete civilian set up who have no political affiliations in order to work for the benefit of the citizens of Karachi. They said that the decision to shift CPLC at CPO and giving its control to the police department was equivalent to shutting it down.

BMG Chairman and President KCCI recalled that CPLC, which was established by the representatives of business and industrial community, came into existence to facilitate the public who were hesitant to approach the police for assistance because of its bad reputation. They underscored that CPLC must be a non-political institution, operationally independent, and it should be managed by dedicated and concerned civilians of Karachi who have a clean and above-board reputation.

They stated that the business and industrial community of Karachi opposes the decision to shift CPLC and would like to urge the authorities to revert this unjust decision in the larger interest of the city. “Instead of transferring it to CPO, the authorities in consultation with the business and industrial community of Karachi, must define a clear strategy to make CPLC completely neutral and more active towards facilitating the public in dealing with police and speeding-up various police-related matters”, they added.
