Karachi Metropolitan Corporation Metropolitan Commissioner Address review meeting held on cleanliness

Karachi, August 12, 2013 (PPI-OT): KMC Metropolitan Commissioner Samiuddin Siddiqui has said that officers of Engineering, Mechanical and Municipal Services Departments in monsoon season should visit the locations where hindrance in flow of storm water due to throwing of debris and garbage in big nullahs were faced and prepare complete and comprehensive report in this regard and repairing works of heavy machinery should start immediately.

He said this while addressing a review meeting held on cleanliness of storm water drains. The meeting was attended by Director General Technical Services Niaz Ahmed Soomro, Sr. Director Municipal Services Masood Alam, Sr. Director Finance Muhammad Rehan Khan, Director City Wardens Minhaj-ul-Haq, Director Solid Waste Management Najeeb Ahmed, Additional Deputy Commissioner District East Agha Parvez, M.C. East Kamal Mustafa, Director Health Services Iqbal Ahmed and other officers.

Metropolitan Commissioner said that big nullahs of the city which include Nehr-e-Khyam, Glass Tower, Mehmoodabad nullah, Manzoor Colony nullah, Chakor nullah, Gujar nullah and Golden Town nullah were being cleaned on preferential basis and Sr. Director Finance was directed for financial resources so that out of order heavy machinery could be put in fine condition.

Metropolitan Commissioner said that KMC has made all its departments on high alert and imposed emergency in concerned departments and staff holidays were postponed.

He said that labour should be used where cleanliness with heavy machinery was not possible due to encroachments.

Samiuddin Siddiqui said that a committee with reference to monsoon was being formed in the supervision of Additional Deputy Commissioners of five districts which include all heads of concerned KMC departments, Municipal Commissioners of five DMCs, Superintending Engineers and other officers who would keep on informing higher authorities about current situation of monsoon.

He said that KMC would purchase heavy pumps for drainage of water soon. He also said that many difficulties were being faced due to using storm water drains as sewerage nullahs therefore citizens were appealed that they should not put garbage in nullahs.

He said that garbage should be shifted to landfill site immediately, nullahs be cleaned with heavy machinery and hindrance in flow of storm water be removed as well.
