Kashmiris living in Shimla being intimidated to leave

Shimla, May 25, 2014 (PPI-OT): Kashmiris living in Shimla, the capital city of the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh, have complained that they are being harassed and forced to leave the area and that raids are being carried out on their houses with the authorities acting as mute spectators.

Several Kashmiri families living in Shimla prior to the Partition, at present, are facing threats from local Waqf board and police and were being forced to leave the place.

“We have been resident here since 1947 but presently we are being forced to migrate from here,” said Nazir Ahmad Mir.

Another labourer, Ghulam Nabi Hadi said that they had been residing near the local mosque of Shimla from years now and that they smoothly were earning for their families.

“We are being harassed at large and that night raids are being carried out by the police, ordering us to leave the place. The local Waqf board is also hand in glove with the police here and that no remedial measures are being taken by the Shimla authorities to end our growing woes.”

Another labourer Muhammad Abbas Wani said they have no source of income and that their families and children will starve. “What other source of income we have. We work as the labourers here and if we leave this place, we will no source of the livelihood.”
