Lucknow: The death of Mohammad Yaqub, a Muslim police constable in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, has ignited controversy and prompted calls from his family for a comprehensive investigation into what they consider suspicious circumstances.
According to Kashmir Media Service announcement issued on 19 July 2024, during a police raid in the Gavana area of Aligarh, a bullet reportedly discharged from the jammed pistol of Sub-Inspector Rajeev Kumar, first hitting the SI in the abdomen and then striking Yaqub in the head, as per the Uttar Pradesh Police’s explanation. This account, however, has been met with skepticism from Yaqub’s family, who question the feasibility of the bullet’s reported trajectory.
Yaqub’s father has publicly expressed doubt about the official version of events, finding the explanation implausible. The family’s distrust extends to concerns over the transparency of the initial police report. Their doubts are echoed by Asaduddin Owaisi, AIMIM chief and Hyderabad MP, who voiced his suspicions on social media, questioning the mechanics of the shooting as described by the authorities.
The family’s insistence on a thorough and transparent investigation is supported by their concern that the incident may have deeper implications, suggesting potential foul play. Their call for clarity and accountability has amplified public interest in the case, highlighting the need for a credible inquiry to determine the true circumstances of Constable Yaqub’s untimely death.
