Message from Secretary, Ministry of Human Rights on occasion of International Human Rights Day

Islamabad, December 09, 2015 (PPI-OT): It is heartening to note that Pakistan joins the international community in celebrating International Human Rights Day today with a firm commitment to accord highest priority to safeguard the Human Rights. Our commitments towards protection and promotion of Human Rights are in line with the theme of this year “Our Rights, Our Freedoms Always”. Protection of Human Rights is guided by the Islamic injunctions and the Constitution of Pakistan through upholding the dignity, freedom and equality for protection of human beings.

In line with our religious, moral, national and international commitments, we are determined to undertake a number of effective steps for protection and promotion of Human Rights in the country. In this direction, we have established Treaty Implementation Cells (TICs) for effective implementation of our international commitments relating to Human Rights. This Ministry has also established “Helpline – 1099” for providing legal advice on Human Rights violations and their effective redressal through referral mechanism.

In order to prioritize the Human Rights agenda, the present government has very recently restored the Human Rights Wing to the Human Rights Ministry to improve the human rights situation in the country. Since, the task of Human Rights requires partnership between public agencies and civil society, therefore, I urge the NGOs, volunteers, philanthropists, national and international development partners, media and corporate sector to come forward and play significant role to ameliorate human rights situation which is our national duty.

I also appreciate the UN agencies, Non-Governmental Organizations and Media for their endeavors in supplementing the government’s efforts to create conducive environment for our people. I hope they will continue pursuing this noble cause with the same spirit. May Allah bless us in this auspicious mission. Aameen.
