Pakistan Announces Strategic Maritime Investments and Initiatives at MARSEW-07

Islamabad: The Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs, Qaiser Ahmed Sheikh, announced several strategic projects and initiatives aimed at advancing Pakistan’s maritime sector during the 7th Maritime Security Workshop (MARSEW-07). The workshop, attended by Navy officials, journalists, parliamentarians, business community members, and academia, focused on strengthening regional maritime security and collaboration.

According to Press Information Department, the Minister detailed the government’s commitment to enhancing regional cooperation and ensuring secure seas for global trade. He highlighted the Iran and Muscat cargo service launch, expected to boost Pakistan’s position as a major trade hub. The Pakistan National Shipping Corporation (PNSC) projects Rs. 60 billion in revenue by 2024, supported by a USD 300 million ship procurement order. Hutchison Ports and AD Ports are investing in Karachi Port’s expansion, enhancing port infrastructure with commitments of USD 1 billion and USD 330 million, respectively.

The Minister emphasized Gwadar Port’s expected role in handling 60% of government cargo and the establishment of a Blue Economy Center in Gwadar. This center aims to manage marine resources sustainably and increase seafood exports to USD 500 million. Additional initiatives include promoting aquaculture, a Pakistani-Chinese seafood sector joint venture, and improving port logistics through digital systems and a Ports Master Plan.

The PKR 12 billion Gadani Project for ship recycling and efforts to revamp maritime laws were also discussed. A Ports Coordination Committee has been set up to boost operational efficiency. The Minister concluded by highlighting the increased role of the private sector in PNSC through public-private partnerships, aiming to strengthen Pakistan’s shipping industry and integrate it into the global maritime trade network.
