Pakistan Bait-ul-Mal and WHO Discuss Collaboration to Enhance Pediatric Cancer Care

Islamabad: Pakistan Bait-ul-Mal (PBM) and the World Health Organization (WHO) have initiated discussions to explore collaborative measures to improve access to treatment for children with cancer. The talks were held at the PBM Head Office, where Managing Director of PBM, Senator Capt. Shaheen Khalid Butt, and WHO Deputy Representative in Pakistan, Ms. Ellen, led the discussions.

According to a statement by Press Information Department, the meeting aimed to strengthen healthcare infrastructure and make quality treatment more accessible to all citizens. PBM highlighted its commitment to supporting underprivileged patients, having disbursed 13.946 billion rupees for the medical treatment of 108,217 cancer patients since 2008. PBM’s efforts extend to various medical conditions, including kidney disease, cardiac issues, thalassemia, hepatitis, and minor or major surgeries.

Ms. Ellen outlined WHO’s Global Initiative for Childhood Cancers, emphasizing the need for facilities that provide social support to the families of cancer patients. She commended PBM’s work in cancer treatment and offered WHO’s technical assistance to identify gaps and improve care quality for children with cancer.

The meeting was attended by WHO consultant and pediatric oncologist Dr. Sumbal Saeed, Dr. Saadia Shahzad, and PBM’s Director of IT, Kashif Nadeem. Both parties expressed a commitment to continuing discussions that could lead to improved healthcare outcomes for children battling cancer in Pakistan.
