Pakistan Cricket Board Disciplinary Committee Verdict

Lahore: Mr. Shahid Khan Afridi today appeared before the PCB Disciplinary Committee Comprising Sultan Rana (Chairman), Shafiq Ahmed and Usman Wahla (Members) at National Cricket Academy Lahore. Tafazzul Rizvi (Legal Advisor PCB) assisted the Committee.

Shahid explained his position and clarified his conduct which has been reported in the media recently and has resulted in suspension of his Central Contract and revocation of his NOC.

After detailed hearing Shahid Afridi regretted and pleaded guilty and requested the Committee to decide the matter. The Committee appreciated Shahid Afridi for recognizing his indiscretion and is treating the same as a mitigating circumstance.

For reasons, to be announced later through a detailed order, the Committee has recommended to impose a fine of Rs. 4.5 Million for breach of various clauses of the Central Contract and Code of Conduct.

As Shahid Afridi has been awarded penalties, therefore on his request committee recommended to PCBB that he be issued a NOC for playing for Hampshire. Chairman PCB has endorsed the recommendations of Disciplinary Committee.

Background:

On May 31, Pakistan Cricket Board announced an action being initiated against Shahid Afridi for breaches he has committed under the Central Contract signed with PCB. He breached Clause 2.1.4 of the Central Contract by announcing his retirement in the manner he did and Clause 4.4 by passing disparaging remarks about the board and its officials. He was issued a show cause notice and his Central Contract was suspended. Consequently all NOCs granted to him were revoked.

On June 2, after receiving response from Mr. Afridi on PCB’s Show Cause Notice in which he admitted the breach of Code of Conduct, Pakistan Cricket Board formulated a Disciplinary Committee consisting Mr. Sultan Rana (Director Domestic Cricket), Mr. Shafiq Ahmed (GM Domestic Cricket) and Mr. Usman Wahla (Manager International Cricket) and laid down the process of Disciplinary proceedings in accordance with PCB Constitution. Mr. Afridi was asked to appear before the Committee on June 8th at GSL, Lahore.

Mr. Afridi filed a Constitutional Petition against the establishment of the Committee in Sindh High Court and the Court stopped the Committee proceedings. On June 15th PCB was informed by Mr. Shahid Khan Afridi that the Constitutional petition filed by him before the Sindh High Court has been dismissed as withdrawn Therefore, in continuation of the procedure that had been postponed as per court orders, PCB directed Shahid Afridi to appear in person before the Disciplinary Committee of PCB on 16 June, 2011 at 3:00 PM at PCB Headquarters, Lahore.
