Karachi: Pakistan is on the verge of another ecological catastrophe, according to Mian Zahid Hussain, a prominent business leader and former provincial minister. Speaking on Tuesday, Hussain criticized the authorities for their lack of preparedness in the face of imminent natural disasters, reminiscent of the 2022 floods that caused extensive human and economic losses.
Hussain highlighted the current situation as dire, with heavy rains and rising river levels already impacting lives and property. He noted that the country’s disaster management systems remain insufficient, leaving thousands at risk. Since June 26, flash floods and collapsing houses have claimed dozens of lives, echoing the devastation of the 2022 floods.
In particular, Hussain pointed to the recent tragedy in Swat, where a surging river swept away tourists. Investigations showed a lack of basic rescue equipment and the absence of flood telemetry systems, which could have provided timely warnings. He emphasized the need for accountability and criticized the state for failing to learn from past mistakes.
Hussain stressed that while Pakistan is vulnerable to climate change, institutional failures compound the problem. He called for serious investment in early warning systems and the empowerment of local governments to respond effectively. Rising temperatures and glacial lake outburst floods in northern areas present additional challenges that require urgent attention.
Encroachments on water channels and blocked river paths exacerbate the situation, yet continue to be overlooked. Hussain urged the Prime Minister to address the Swat tragedy, hold responsible parties accountable, and review the performance of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).
He concluded by warning that without comprehensive action on climate change and improved disaster management, Pakistan will face recurring flood disasters. Hussain called for a commitment to funding and governance reforms to protect vulnerable communities and safeguard the nation’s future.
