Pakistan Institute of Corporate Governance organising conference on GSP Plus: Opportunities through Good Governance on January 29

Karachi, January 17, 2014 (PPI-OT): The granting of the GSP Plus status to Pakistan has come at a most auspicious time, the onset of the New Year. Pakistan Institute of Corporate Governance (PICG) is taking the lead in organizing a Conference titled GSP Plus: Opportunities Through Good Governance on Wednesday, January 29, 2014 at the Marriott Hotel, Karachi.

Generalized System of Preferences Plus or GSP Plus grants preferential treatment, that is, duty free access to exports from Pakistan. GSP Plus will require adherence to 27 EU conventions on good governance, human rights and labor rights and environmental protection. PICG’s objective in organizing this Conference is to further the cause of sound corporate governance in small and medium sized enterprises in our manufacturing and export sectors.

This Conference is a great opportunity to learn about the implications of the grant of GSP Plus from a good governance perspective, for example, what sort of compliance and governance measures foreign investors would like to see implemented in Pakistani companies under the GSP Plus scheme.

GSP Plus status has been granted to Pakistan for a 3-year term starting on January 1, 2014, but implementation of good governance and an understanding of EU’s legal and compliance environment will help local companies attract foreign investment in the long term. This Conference is expected to generate interest in listed as well as non-listed companies and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the textile sector as well as in leather, chemicals, fisheries and farming, engineering goods etc.
