Pakistan Raises Concerns Over Kishanganga Project Design on Jhelum River

Islamabad: Pakistan has officially raised objections to the design of the Kishanganga Hydel-Power Project on the Jhelum River, citing potential violations of the Indus Basin Treaty with India. The concerns were discussed during a meeting of the National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Water Resources, which convened in Parliament House under the chairmanship of Khalid Magsi.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the Secretary of the Water Resources Ministry provided a detailed briefing to the committee members, stating that Pakistan’s objections center on the project’s design, which they claim alters the course of the river and reduces its water level. The project, located just meters from the Line of Control (LOC) in the region known as Neelum in Pakistan, is viewed as a critical issue affecting the water supply and river ecology.

The secretary also highlighted ongoing legal challenges regarding the treaty, noting that there are currently two cases pending against India related to this agreement. India has launched a counter-case, but Pakistan maintains that the matter falls under judicial jurisdiction and is pending a decision in The Hague.
