Karachi, November 21, 2013 (PPI-OT): Pakistan Tanners Association (PTA) has warmly welcomed the move by the Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research Sikandar Hayat Bosan for imposing complete ban on the export of live animals.
In a statement Chairman PTA (SZ) Fawad Jawed and Vice President, Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) Gulzar Firoz have said that the a complete ban on export of livestock was need of the hour and the country was fast losing its precious livestock creating a crisis like situation in the meat industry as well as leather sector.
They said that PTA had been appealing and crying for the ban on export of livestock as it was badly damaging meat industry while there was a severe shortage of hides and skins had been created besides increasing their prices.
They said that everywhere in the world the governments protect their value-added sectors in order to promote exports and to bring more foreign exchange instead of selling capital goods at cheap rates.
Fawad said that on the pretext of export, the massive smuggling of livestock was continuing from Pakistan to Iran, Afghanistan and other countries which had resulted in skyrocketing prices of meat and hides and skins.
Fawad added that due to the smuggling the prices of meat in Pakistan have shot up by over 200 per cent in the recent years while it badly hurt the meat industry, leather and footwear industries.
He pointed out that leather sector’s exports have gone down due to the reason to about little over one billion dollars from two billion dollars in the last couple of years. He advised the government to devise a policy of developing livestock and dairy industry and there should be emphasis on exporting meat instead of livestock.
