Pakistan won election for the External Auditor of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization for a third consecutive two-year term

Islamabad: The 14th Session of UNIDO’s General Conference held in Vienna, 28 November- 2 December, 2011, elected the Auditor General of Pakistan, Mr. Muhammad Akhtar Buland Rana, as External Auditor. The election took place by acclamation after the withdrawal of Turkey, Spain, Ghana and Ukraine.

Prior to this a three-day meeting of the Vienna Energy Forum was organized by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), the Austrian Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs, and the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA).

Secretary Industries Mr. Aziz Ahmed Bilour led the Pakistani delegation and on behalf of the Government of Pakistan forcefully presented the candidature of the Auditor General of Pakistan for re election as the External Auditor of UNIDO. Addressing the meeting he said:

“This bid for re-election is in complete accord with the practice followed by UNIDO and important international organizations including the IAEA, the UN, UNESCO and WIPO. Re-election of Auditor General of Pakistan will ensure a reasonable balance between the additional cost of changing the external auditor and the benefits of the change.”

Pakistan’s candidature had been endorsed by powerful groups including the G-77 and China, the Asian Group and the African Group. The election by consensus reflected the international community’s strong support for Pakistan. It also showed UNIDO membership’s satisfaction with the performance of Pakistan’s Auditor General, his professionalism and expertise.

Mr. Aziz Ahmad Bilour extended his best wishes to the Auditor General of Pakistan for winning this honour for the country and making the nation proud.
