Pakistani Leaders Advocate for Full Integration of Persons with Disabilities

Islamabad: President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif have reiterated their commitment to advancing the rights and inclusion of Persons with Disabilities in all areas of society, urging collective action from society to dismantle existing barriers.

According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, both leaders delivered their messages on the occasion of the ‘International Day of Persons with Disabilities’, calling upon institutions, businesses, and civil society to foster environments where individuals with disabilities can thrive and lead. They highlighted the significance of respecting these individuals and equipping them with necessary resources.

President Zardari noted that Pakistan has made notable progress in empowering Persons with Disabilities, citing the ICT Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2020 as a pivotal step toward enhancing accessibility, vocational training, and employment opportunities. He urged all societal segments to facilitate full participation of persons with disabilities in employment, sports, education, and other socio-economic activities.

Prime Minister Sharif pointed out the government’s efforts to provide equal opportunities in education, employment, healthcare, and public life for individuals with disabilities. He emphasized the importance of challenging discriminatory attitudes and fostering respect and understanding. Sharif also underscored initiatives such as improving access to assistive technologies and disability-friendly infrastructure as part of this vision. Additionally, he acknowledged the contributions of caregivers and advocates supporting the disabled community.
