President Lahore Press Club called on the Prime Minister

Islamabad: Mr. Sarmad Bashir, President Lahore Press Club (LPC), called on Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani at PM’s House here today and discussed matters pertaining to the welfare of journalist community and also asked for the release of the grant for the press club announced by the Prime Minister at the time of oath taking ceremony in October last year.

The Prime Minister directed the Ministry of Finance to immediately release the grant and also consider favourably the proposals for the welfare of the journalist community presented by the President of LPC to the Prime Minister.

The Prime Minister directed the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting to take up the matter with the Ministry of Finance and expedite the summary regarding the payment of development charges for providing residential accommodation to the journalists of Lahore.

The Prime Minister said that the democratic government considered the freedom of press as an integral part of democratic dispensation and therefore encouraged the free expression of views to promote plurality and tolerance in the society.

The Prime Minister said that he has created the Endowment Fund for the welfare of the journalists of the country by contributing Rs. 200 million as seed money.
