Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif Directs Formation of Consultation Committee on Carbon Credits Policy

Islamabad, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has called for the establishment of a consultation committee to develop policy guidelines for carbon credits in collaboration with the provinces. The directive came during the third meeting of the Pakistan Council for Climate Change, where federal and provincial governments discussed the development of policies addressing climate change.

According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the committee will work to create guiding principles for carbon credits, allowing for effective policy-making at both federal and provincial levels. The meeting also focused on the specifics of foreign trading in carbon credits and how it could contribute to Pakistan’s environmental and economic goals.

Prime Minister Sharif emphasized that the federal government would work closely with provincial authorities to ensure a cohesive approach to policy development on climate change. He instructed that a draft policy should be presented at the Council’s next meeting after thorough consultation with the provinces.

The chief ministers from the four provinces participated in the meeting, sharing their perspectives on policy-making and offering recommendations for the carbon credits policy framework.

The move to establish a consultation committee underscores Pakistan’s commitment to tackling climate change and adopting sustainable practices. By involving both federal and provincial stakeholders, the government aims to create policies that are not only effective but also widely accepted across the country.
