Lahore: In response to directives from Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif, Punjab Police has significantly intensified its efforts against electricity theft across the province, leading to thousands of arrests and convictions this year.
According to Punjab Police, a total of 63,137 cases of electricity theft have been registered, with law enforcement arresting 33,845 individuals involved in these illegal activities. The crackdown has been particularly robust in Lahore, where 18,479 cases were filed and 18,250 suspects were taken into custody. The police have completed challans for over 39,300 cases, resulting in 5,295 convictions, highlighting a substantial impact on curbing losses to the national exchequer.
IG Punjab Dr. Usman Anwar has further directed supervisory officers to enhance the crackdown’s effectiveness by fostering stronger collaborations with the Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO) and other relevant institutions across all districts. Dr. Anwar emphasized the urgency of improving the challan submission rate and instructed a rigorous approach to apprehend and prosecute proclaimed offenders actively.
The campaign also includes a strategic action plan in cooperation with LESCO and local authorities to not only apprehend perpetrators but also recover losses from those convicted of electricity theft. Dr. Anwar reiterated the commitment to maintaining a zero-tolerance policy and continuing indiscriminate actions against those who jeopardize the national economy by engaging in such illegal activities.
