Punjab’s Ambitious Tree Planting and Agro Forestry Plans Under Review

Lahore: The Punjab government is pushing forward with an ambitious initiative to plant seven million trees within the current fiscal year, as part of the Chief Minister’s “Plant for Punjab” project. In a recent meeting chaired by Secretary of the Planning and Development Board, Dr. Asif Tufail, progress was reviewed, revealing that 1.2 million trees have already been planted. The meeting underscored the urgency of accelerating efforts to meet this target.

According to a statement by Planning and Development Board – Punjab, Special Secretary of the Punjab Forest Department, Cpt. (R) Tahir Zafar Abbasi, provided an update during the meeting. The initiative aims to address environmental challenges and create sustainable farming on unused forest land through Agro Forestry. This approach is expected to generate new livelihood opportunities for local communities.

The meeting was attended by several key officials, including Sr. Chief Consultancy Ms. Shafaq Saleem, Chief Environment Ms. Saba Asghar, Chief Technical Mr. Abid Inayat Sheikh, and Sr. Chief Energy Mr. Tariq Javed. These discussions are part of a broader strategy to leverage agro-forestry practices to enhance both environmental and economic outcomes in the region.
