Rana Ayub grills Christian world for silence over burning of 249 churches in Manipur

Guwahati, June 18, 2023 (PPI-OT): Rana Ayyub, an Indian journalist and opinion columnist with The Washington Post, who is under fire for Modi government’s anti-communal politics, has said that criticized the Christian world for being silent over attacks on churches and Christians people in Manipur state of India. Rana Ayub in a twitter message shared an article by a bishop based in Manipur. The Archbishop of Imphal said that 249 churches burnt in Manipur. In his account, the Archbishop has connected this with the revival of Sanamahism, the indigenous religion of Meiteis, and the emergence of groups such as Arambai Tenggol and Meitei Leepun.

Recording at least 10 alleged instances of institutions under the Catholic Church being attacked since the violence broke out, he claimed that 249 churches belonging to Meitei Christians had been destroyed within 36 hours since the start of the violence. “The wonder is in the midst of the fight between the Kukis and the Meiteis, why did the Meitei mob burn down and destroy 249 churches located in the Meitei heartland? How is it that there was almost a natural attack on the church in the Meitei localities itself and how did the mob know where the churches were located if not attacks were pre-planned.

A political analyst commenting on the Modi regime’s motives said, “All this is going below the radar. India is going Scott-free in the Christian world as it has managed to show this as ethnic violence, a blatant cover up. Only Pakistan can be vigilant on this and project it as what it really is.”
