Rapid increase in population is a threat to Pakistan: Hashim Dogar

Lahore, April 18, 2019 (PPI-OT): Punjab Minister for Population Welfare Col. Retd. Hashim Dogar has said that if this message increase in population is not controlled then population of Pakistan would increase from 22 crore to 45 crore during the next 30 years. He said that population of Punjab is 11 crore at this time which will increase upto 22 to 25 crore during next 25 years. He was addressing second international students’ convention and Expo 2019 here, today. The Minister said that the world population is growing rapidly and it is feared that it would convert into a bomb soon. Col. Retd. Hashim Dogar said that Pakistan is a developing country and if its population is continued to increase with this speed then it would be difficult for it to fulfil the needs of a large population.

He said that Pakistan is the second largest country of South Asia after Afghanistan and 64 percent of its population is comprised of youth. He stressed that no country can make progress with rapid population increase and I feel that population control should be our top most priority. On this occasion, Provincial Minister appreciated the parents who send their daughters to schools and supported them in making their career.

He said that education is the best contraceptive and students can play an important role in making married couples aware about family planning. He told that Punjab government is going to bring a bill in assembly to increase the marriage age of a girl from 16 years to 18 years. A number of students from different universities attended the convention and expo 2019.
