Refusal to compensate Farooq Dar undermines officials of IOK HR body

Srinagar, February 03, 2018 (PPI-OT): In occupied Kashmir, some officials of the Human Rights Commission have felt undermined by the puppet authorities’ refusal to provide compensation to Farooq Dar, a man from Badgam who was tied to the bonnet of a jeep by an Indian army officer and used as a human shield in April, last year.

An official of the Commission on the condition of anonymity told media men that if an empowerment committee has to decide the cases why is there a need for having a human rights commission? We had hoped the authorities might re-consider their decision but Friday’s refusal was a snub to the commission, he added.

The Commission had in July last year asked the puppet authorities to pay Rs 10 lac in compensation to Farooq Dar but it was declined. The army had commended Major Leetul Gogoi for the brutal act of using the civilian as a human shield.

Human rights activist, Muhammad Ahsan Untoo said that the authorities were more concerned about protecting the rights of the army. “If the authorities cannot protect the rights of a voter how can they protect the rights of common people,” said Untoo, who was pleading Farooq Dar’s case before the human rights commission.
