Shehbaz Sharif Sets Ambitious Target for IT Exports

Islamabad: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has expressed satisfaction with the current efforts to amplify Pakistan’s IT exports to $25 billion by 2030. In a meeting held in Islamabad, he emphasized streamlining regulations and enhancing local infrastructure to bolster the country’s IT capabilities.

According to a statement by Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the Prime Minister chaired a review meeting focusing on the IT sector’s growth strategies. He called for simplifying right-of-way regulations to expand broadband services via fiber optics, aiming to make the country more digitally connected.

Shehbaz Sharif also highlighted the necessity of aligning IT training for youth with global market demands to increase employment opportunities overseas. He advocated facilitating visa processes for foreign businesspersons interested in Pakistan’s IT sector, including a 24-hour visa issuance for those hiring Pakistani IT firms, based on recommendations from the Pakistan Software Export Board.

The Prime Minister insisted on developing a comprehensive strategy for marketing Pakistan’s IT sector internationally. He underscored the importance of improving IT infrastructure to support this goal.

During the meeting, detailed briefings were provided about ongoing efforts to increase IT exports. Discussions included enhancing smartphone accessibility, broadband expansion, and internet speed improvements. Plans were also outlined to increase the number of freelancers in Pakistan from 1.4 million to two million within the next two years. The DigiSkills program aims to train over 300,000 individuals by June, with a target to train 900,000 by 2025.

The meeting was informed that consultations on a national AI policy are in progress, with a proposal expected to be presented for approval next month.
