Srinagar: Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) is confronting a significant unemployment issue, particularly among women, as a recent Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) conducted in India highlights a 53.6% unemployment rate among young females, marking the highest in the South Asian region.
According to a statement by Kashmir Media Service, the situation is further complicated by IIOJK’s uncertain political status. The region has seen frequent incidents of violence and arrests, which have necessitated women stepping out as breadwinners. Despite this shift, job opportunities remain scarce, leaving many women in a precarious economic position.
The PLFS data also reveals that the youth unemployment rate in IIOJK is at 32% for urban residents aged 15-29, a figure that significantly surpasses the national average.
Experts point to structural job market challenges, political instability, and ineffective economic policies as key contributors to the crisis.
With more than 352,000 young individuals registered as unemployed in the first quarter of 2024, including nearly 31% holding graduate or postgraduate degrees, the need for sustainable economic reforms and initiatives focused on empowering Kashmiri women has become increasingly urgent.
