Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation to launch public advocacy campaign for deceased organ donation

Karachi, April 14, 2016 (PPI-OT):Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT) is launching a week long campaign from April 16 to heighten public awareness about the concept of deceased organ donation and its everlasting impact on saving of human lives. World over deceased organ donation has been described as a great act of generosity giving new lease of life to the millions of patients who reach to the end stage of their organs.

Unfortunately Pakistan is one of those few countries which are lagging behind in this field. The short fall calls for great mobilization of all segments of the society. SIUT with the support of with Transplant Society of Pakistan and newly created Human Organ Transplantation Authority (HOTA) of Sindh province has organized a day long series of seminars to encompass the various aspects of the deceased donor program.

Representatives of the health department Govt. of Sindh, country’s leading transplant surgeons, allied medical practitioners, opinion makers, religious scholars, jurists, academicians and social scientists would take part in the proceedings. The Sindh Health Minister Dr Jam Mehtab Dahar will preside over the concluding session and Mufti Muneeb-ur-Rehman will deliver his keynote address on Islam and Transplantation.

According to an estimate some 70 thousand people die due to liver failure, some 40 thousand lose their battle of life on account of kidney failure and 15 thousand due to heart failures. These figures are hospital based and described as the tip of an iceberg mainly because the cases of hepatitis, diabetes and hypertension are rising particularly in rural parts of the country which often fails to reach the hospitals. SIUT has maintained that there is a need to create a vibrant deceased organ donation program in the country by converting tragedies into miracles.
