Karachi, January 08, 2017 (PPI-OT): A three day 4th Sindh Sartyoon Sang (together with friends) Crafts Exhibition aimed at empowering rural communities socially and economically by developing market linkages and to promote local indigenous crafts through proper marketing concluded on Sunday at shopping mall in Clifton Karachi. Sindh Rural Support Organization (SRSO) was hosting the event.
A range of eye –catching handmade products of Sindh’s handicrafts including; Susi fabric apparels, home textiles, accessories, variety of Khusa (foot wear), with pure leather stuff, Rilli, Ajrak , shawl, baskets, hand bags, serving dishes , jewellery items, decoration pieces , wooden lacquer products, jandi items, natural dye Sarhi, bed sheets and crochet work products were put on display for three days. Gul Khatoon, Zaibunisa, Badshah Zadi, Mai Soomri, Ameeran Beghum, Rehmat Khatoon, Imtiaz Khatoon, Shabeeran, Najma, Hajiran and other women artisans’ work showcased.
The event attracted large number of families including foreigners. The visitors remarked that it was brilliant idea to provide opportunity to rural women artisans to familiarize them with urban market demands as well promoting indigenous handicrafts of Sindh.
Talking on the occasion, provincial secretary for social welfare/ member board of director (SRSO) Dr. Shireen Mustafa Nareejo said that SRSO was established with the financial support of Sindh government in order to supplement policy of poverty reduction, skill development of rural communities at gross root level by organizing them and helping them through multiple interventions, so as to enable them to earn sustainable livelihood. She informed that this program is successfully running in ten districts of upper Sindh with special focus on women artisans. She said that Sartyoon Sang program has eliminated the exploitation of middlemen and women were getting real profits of their hard work.
CEO SRSO Dittal Kalhoro said that eight thousand women have been trained in specialized crafts trade adding that economic independence was first step toward self reliance and empowerment of disadvantaged women of rural communities. He informed that last year alone, 1014 artisans organized in 7 districts, participated in the production of various handmade crafts and attained sale of Rs. 1.8316 million against which an amount of Rs. O.76422 million was distributed as profit to women. He said that such exhibition would also be organized at international level.
