NC Criticizes Election Commission’s Decision to Postpone Polls in Jammu and Kashmir

Srinagar, Omar Abdullah, Vice-President of the National Conference, has sharply criticized the Election Commission of India for postponing the Islamabad-Rajouri parliamentary elections, accusing it of disenfranchising nomadic communities in the region.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the elections, originally scheduled for May 7, were pushed back to May 25 after the Election Commission received requests from several political entities. Abdullah argued that the rescheduling was unfairly targeted at the nomadic population of the Pir Panchal region and alleged that the postponement was influenced by political pressures from parties like the BJP and Peoples Conference, neither of which are contesting in this redrawn constituency.

During a rally in Dooru, Abdullah emphasized the existence of alternative routes connecting Kashmir with the Rajouri-Poonch area, disputing the logistical challenges cited as reasons for the delay. His remarks highlight ongoing tensions and concerns over electoral fairness and representation in the region.
