Srinagar, February 28, 2013 (PPI-OT): In occupied Kashmir, speakers at a human rights seminar demanded legal action against the police officers who falsely implicated Muhammad Afzal Guru in the 2001 Parliament attack. The seminar on ‘Afzal Guru and Collective Conscience of Kashmir’ was organized by human rights activist Muhammad Ahsan Untoo under the banner of International Forum for Justice and Human Rights.
In the backdrop of Afzal Guru’s hanging in Tihar jail, the members of civil society said that Guru’s hanging might have satisfied the collective conscience of 15 percent of elite class of Indians but at the same time, it had awakened the conscience of rest of the real Indian middle class.
Speaking at the seminar, the scholars and intellectuals said that since 1947, the role of Indian Judiciary related to Kashmir matters had always been biased. In his speech noted human rights activist, Parvez Imroze said that normally it was being said that Guru’s trail was not a fair trial and it was a rarest of rare cases but the fact was that in Kashmir related matters the role of Indian judiciary had always been doubtful.
Noted writer, Abdul Majid Zargar said right from the beginning the case of Guru was manipulated and India proved it that the Kashmiris were not her own people. “Since 1947 India had never been ready to give Muslims their right which was a base of the Partition,” he said.
Senior journalist Riyaz Masroor said that India was causing enormous discomfort to the hapless Kashmiris. “The mindset that has emerged among the people after the execution of Guru will prove dangerous for India. A new voice of Muslims is emerging out from India,” he added.
Masroor also said that India was sitting on a ticking bomb of religious intolerance. “In the garb of liberalism a religious fundamentalist state is emerging,” he said.
“Why no legal action has been initiated against the police officers who falsely implicated Afzal Guru in the Parliament attack? Why their role is deliberately ignored?” asked Untoo. Others who spoke on the occasion included writer Dr Javid Iqbal, Professor Ghulam Muhammad and several others.
