Turkiye and Azerbaijan Reaffirm Support for Kashmiris’ Self-Determination

New York: Turkiye and Azerbaijan have reaffirmed their support for the right to self-determination for the people of Kashmir, aligning with United Nations Security Council resolutions, during a Kashmir Solidarity Day event in New York.

According to a statement by Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the event was hosted jointly by the Permanent Mission of Pakistan to the UN and the Consulate General of Pakistan in New York. Ambassador Ahmet Yildiz, the Permanent Representative of Turkiye to the UN, criticized India’s unilateral actions in Jammu and Kashmir, including demographic and legal changes, and highlighted that the annulment of Article 370 has complicated the situation. He emphasized that relevant UNSC resolutions provide the framework for a just resolution of the Kashmir dispute.

Ambassador Tofig Musayev, representing Azerbaijan at the UN, underscored the necessity of resolving the Jammu and Kashmir issue in line with international norms and UNSC resolutions. He called for ongoing efforts to establish sustainable peace in South Asia and noted the active involvement of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in peace and security matters.

The OIC’s Permanent Observer, Ambassador Hameed Ajibaiye Opeloyeru, reiterated the organization’s strong support for the Kashmir cause, demanding the revocation of measures introduced on August 5, 2019, intended to alter the demographic structure of Jammu and Kashmir.

Saudi Arabia’s Deputy Permanent Representative, Mohammed Abdulaziz Alateek, stressed the importance of constructive dialogue for a peaceful resolution, advocating for the aspirations of Kashmiris to be acknowledged and respected.

In his opening remarks, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative, Ambassador Munir Akram, expressed gratitude to the OIC Contact Group on Jammu and Kashmir for their steadfast support of Kashmiris’ rights. He framed the Kashmiris’ struggle as a fight for fundamental rights and justice.
