UN Reaffirms Commitment to Peaceful Resolution of Jammu and Kashmir Dispute

New York: The United Nations has reiterated its commitment to a peaceful resolution of the Jammu and Kashmir issue, consistent with its longstanding policies and the principles of its charter.

According to Kashmir Media Service, during a daily briefing at the UN Headquarters, Farhan Aziz Haq, the deputy spokesperson for Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, emphasized that any final settlement of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute must adhere to the UN Charter and relevant Security Council resolutions, while fully respecting human rights.

The clarification came in response to a journalist’s query regarding perceived UN inaction on the region following the revocation of Article 370 by India on August 5, 2019, which previously granted special status to Jammu and Kashmir. Haq asserted, “Our position on Kashmir remains unchanged: That the final settlement of the dispute concerning Jammu and Kashmir is to be reached by peaceful means in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations and full respect for human rights.”
