Union of Small and Medium Enterprises commemorates World Standards Day

Karachi, October 15, 2013 (PPI-OT): The members of the Union of Small and Medium Enterprises (UNISAME) gathered to commemorate the World Standards Day at a local club to emphasize on the need for the SMEs to maintain international standards and bench marks for growth and positive change in a challenging global economy.

President UNISAME Zulfikar Thaver said despite the high cost of production, energy crisis, poor infrastructure and law and order the SMEs have not compromised on quality and need to be complimented for their best business practices.

Pakistani entrepreneurs need the right environment and uninterrupted supply of energy. The government will witness a big increase in production if it ensures law and order and energy to the industrial units and it will reflect on the whole economy he maintained.

Speaking on the occasion he highlighted the facts that it is important to maintain standard in the entire supply chain and it is the responsibility of each member of the chain to maintain the standard as the end consumer expects that he gets his money’s worth and is disappointed on any deviation and discards the brand for future buying.

He pointed out that Pakistan can become one of the outstanding exporters in the global market as it is blessed with resources and if standard is maintained from the farm level to the final stage with value addition and inspection it can increase our exports remarkably.

He said that Switzerland does not grow cocoa yet it makes the best chocolates in the world. It does not have steel yet it makes the best watches. Likewise there are many countries in the world who do not have the resources and are importing raw materials and making the best products. Japan makes the best electronic goods and automobiles, Germany the best machinery with imported raw materials.

Pakistan has ample resources but lacks technology and other facilities. There is a technological gap and the institutions like the Engineering Development Board (EDB), the Pakistan Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (PCSIR), the National Productivity Organization (NPO), the Business, Agriculture and the Competitiveness Support Funds can play an active role. The chambers of commerce and industry and the trade associations can also play a proactive role.

He urged the government to promote entrepreneurship, transfer of technology, finance and give incentives for innovative industries and import substitution industries.

In conclusion he stressed the need for a best business bureau (BBB) as in the advance countries of the world where the customer can lodge a complaint against the standard of a product or services and the bureau takes the seller to task for supply of inferior or sub standard product or services and penalizes the supplier for not maintaining the standard.
