Zin gas can change energy outlook of Pakistan: Farida Rashid

Islamabad, November 26, 2012 (PPI-OT): The Islamabad Women’s Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IWCCI) on Monday said Zin gas can cater for all the energy requirements of Pakistan for next one hundred years.

Extraction from Zin Block can end energy crisis and cease the need to import LPG, LNG or natural gas from any country, said Farida Rashid, President IWCCI.

Speaking to women entrepreneurs, she said that quantity of gas in Zin is almost double than that in Sui, the biggest natural gas field in Pakistan serving since 1955.

The reserve, if commercially exploited will help Pakistan save huge foreign exchange, bring an end to gas scarcity for CNG, fertiliser and power sectors and revive economy, she said.

Farida Rashid said that Zin block is surrounded by major natural gas producing fields of Pirkoh, Loti, Sui and Uch and its gas can start flowing in the system within next six months settling severe energy crisis forever.

Instead of importing gas from Iran or Turkmenistan, facing international pressures and investing billions in projects surrounded by risks, government should seriously consider exploring indigenous hydrocarbon resources on war footings, she said.

The IWCCI president said that Sui gas field accounts for 26 per cent of country’s gas production, it is left with only 2 trillion cubic feet gas while the daily production is around 604 million cubic feet. The grim scenario calls for immediate exploration and extraction initiatives, she added.

She said that Zin Block, located in Dera Bugti district, cannot be explored since sixteen years which is unfortunate despite the fact that it can guarantee prosperity by putting economy back on track.

Farida Rashid asked to government to adopt an aggressive strategy on exploration and production front in the unexplored areas of Balochistan to boost supply by two billion cubic feet per day.

Our policy makers have turned to import of gas to fulfil the deficit ignoring local resources; she said adding that further delay in Zin exploration cannot be justified under any circumstances.
