1st meeting of the Inquiry Commission on Abbottabad Operation Held

Islamabad: First meeting of the Inquiry Commission on Abbottabad Operation dated 2nd May, 2011 was held on 5th July, 2011 in the Committee Room of the Cabinet Division at 3:00 p.m. under the Chairmanship of Mr. Justice Javed Iqbal, Senior most Judge of the Supreme Court of Pakistan and President of the Commission. The meeting was attended by Mr. Abbas Khan, I.G. ®, Mr. Ashraf Jehangir Qazi, and Lt. Gen. ® Nadeem, members of the Commission. The Commission met in accordance with the terms of reference assigned to it viz:-

To ascertain full facts regarding the presence of Osama Bin Laden in Pakistan for such a long time;

Investigate circumstances and facts regarding the US operation;

Determine the nature, background and causes of lapses of authorities concerned, if any; and

Make consequential recommendations.

The Commission chalked out modalities of its working and decided that its proceedings will be independent, transparent, thorough, impartial, nonpartisan and in camera whenever required. The commission further decided that senior civil, military and political leadership will also be requested to attend the proceedings if needed by the Commission.

Individuals who are interested in appearing before the Commission with information pertaining to Abbottabad Operation will be invited through press/media to inform the Commission by 31st July, 2011. They will be notified by the Commission about the date, time and venue for their appearance. Their identity will be kept confidential and they will also be legally protected. Commission can co-opt experts of specified fields for any kind of assistance.

Ministry of Interior and ISI have been directed to ensure that the family of Osama Bin Laden is not repatriated from Pakistan without the consent of the Commission.

The next meeting of the Commission will be held on Monday the 11th July, 2011.
