2 die 69 wounded in quake in Jammu area

Srinagar, May 01, 2013 (PPI-OT): At least, two persons were killed, and 69, including 43 students were wounded when an earthquake measuring 5.8 hit school buildings in Bhaderwah , Kishtwar and Doda areas of Jammu, this afternoon.

According to the officials, twenty-nine people, including 23 school children, were injured when three school buildings collapsed in Bhaderwah town of Doda district. Another 24 people, including 20 school children, were injured when three school buildings collapsed in Gandoh area of Doda district.

The epicentre of the earthquake was on the border of Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh —some 17 kilometres northeast of Bhaderwah and 23 kilometres south-southeast of Kishtwar, officials said.

The Kishtwar-Batote highway was blocked due to heavy landslides triggered by the earthquake. Newly constructed hospital and college buildings also suffered extensive damage in the Kishtwar area.
