Message from minister for human resource development on the occasion of Labour Day

Islamabad, May 01, 2013 (PPI-OT): Workers are the backbone and strength of any progressive nation. The Government is committed to the welfare and upkeep of the working class.

May Day reminds us of the sacrifices of the Martyrs of Chicago. The workers staged demonstrations against socio-economic exploitation, long working hours and sought provision of fundamental human rights at the workplace.

We believe that labour is an integral part of our economy. The tremendous contribution by our workers in economic development and growth of the country in recent years can’t be denied. It is high time to realize that workers should be given their rights and dignity in society and to motivate them for economic prosperity.

The present Government is committed to welfare and upkeep of the working class. The Government Employee’s Old age Benefits Institution takes care of the old-age pension of the registered workers. Workers’ Welfare Fund is providing labour welfare in the shape of scholarships to the workers’ children, free education, death grant, marriage grant and provision of housing facilities. Rights of the workers at work place are protected through labour laws implemented by the Provincial Labour Departments.

On this special day, I appeal to the working class to join hands to make Pakistan a truly progressive, moderate and enlightened country for fulfilling the dreams of the Founder of the Nation Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah.
