Government Urges Public Awareness to Combat Heatwave Risks in Pakistan

Islamabad, The Climate Change and Environmental Coordination Ministry is intensifying efforts to educate the public on coping with increasingly severe heatwaves, which pose significant health risks. A spokesperson for the ministry, Muhammad Saleem Shaikh, emphasized the vulnerability of specific groups such as children, the elderly, and pregnant women to heat-related illnesses and underscored the importance of avoiding unnecessary heat exposure, especially during peak hours.

According to Press Information Department, Shaikh detailed the proactive measures directed by Romina Khurshid Alam, the PM’s Coordinator on Climate Change, including enhanced collaboration among federal and provincial agencies to improve public awareness and preparedness. The ministry is advocating for the adoption of heat-resilient agricultural practices and the installation of public cooling and hydration stations to mitigate the effects of heatwaves. Moreover, ongoing research highlights that such extreme weather events are likely to become more frequent and intense, prompting urgent action to safeguard public health and food security.
