77 Percent of Women Feel Unsafe on Delhi Buses After Dark: Report

New Delhi: Over 77 percent of women feel unsafe commuting on Delhi buses after dark, even as the city government’s fare-free bus travel scheme has issued over 100 crore ‘pink tickets’ to women, a report stated.

According to Kashmir Media Service, in its latest report ‘Riding the Justice Route’, Greenpeace India, a non-governmental organization, found that 77 percent of surveyed women expressed concerns about their safety while using public transport.

The report further revealed that 23 percent of the surveyed women are considering changing their use of public buses, prioritizing their safety over convenience. It stated that the government has not succeeded in providing safe and comfortable transport options where women can remain free from molestation. The safety issues are compounded by poor lighting and infrequent bus schedules, the report noted.

The report also highlighted numerous incidents of harassment reported by women, particularly in overcrowded buses.
