Acting Wafaqi Mohtasib takes suo-moto notice of media reports of deaths of children due to avoidable outbreak of measles

Islamabad, January 12, 2013 (PPI-OT): Acting Wafaqi Mohtasib, Mr. Salman Faruqui has taken suo-moto notice of the media reports of the large number of deaths of children due to avoidable outbreak of measles in different parts of the country.

Mr. Faruqui observed with regret that hundreds of children have reportedly lost their lives and many are still suffering the agony of the disease because of the apparent indifferent attitude of the concerned functionaries of the Government who are responsible for not making appropriate arrangements to procure the required quantity of vaccine in time and to ensure its availability in the country.

Notices have been issued to Federal institutions concerned which are responsible in the matter to determine whether there was any maladministration and to fix responsibility for the lapse, if any.

Mr. Faruqui has also requested the Provincial Ombudsmen of Sindh, Punjab, KPK, Baluchistan and AJK to probe into the lapses of the officers working in their respective provincial government agencies, and monitoring and surveillance cells. These organizations had apparently failed to perform their official obligations of taking preventive steps in time against the outbreak of the disease and to ensure speedy implementation of the immunization campaign.
