Australia Expels Indian Intelligence Operatives for Espionage Activities

Canberra, Australia has reportedly expelled several Indian intelligence officers accused of attempting to steal sensitive defense technology and classified information regarding airport security and trade relationships. This operation, conducted by the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO) in 2020, has only recently come to light through reports by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC).

According to Kashmir Media Service, the expelled operatives were part of what has been described as a “nest of spies” by ASIO. These agents were allegedly engaged in monitoring the Indian diaspora in Australia, developing strategic relationships with current and former Australian politicians, and infiltrating government sectors to obtain classified information.

The activities of these spies were hinted at by ASIO director-general Mike Burgess during his annual threat assessment speech in March 2021. While Burgess did not specifically name India at the time, he detailed the operatives’ efforts to develop relationships with a foreign embassy, a state police service, and their attempts to secure classified trade information and details on security protocols at a major Australian airport.

Burgess also revealed that the espionage group had successfully recruited an Australian government employee with security clearance, granting them access to critical details about defense technologies.

ABC reports have confirmed with national security and government sources that the operatives were indeed part of India’s Research and Analysis Wing, the country’s foreign intelligence service. These revelations have highlighted ongoing espionage activities by countries considered allies of Australia, reflecting Burgess’s comments in his 2022 Annual Threat Assessment about espionage efforts by “friends with sharp elbows.”

This incident underscores the complex dynamics of international espionage and the challenges nations face in protecting sensitive information even from allied countries.
