Srinagar: Residents of Baramulla, in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), demonstrated against the severe neglect of the Azad Gunj-Drangbal road, which has fallen into disrepair, affecting daily life and local businesses.
According to Kashmir Media Service announcement issued on 19 July 2024, the 4-kilometer road linking the old town area has been left riddled with potholes and covered in dust, posing significant challenges for residents, shopkeepers, and transporters. The lack of adequate street lighting has made nighttime travel particularly dangerous, further aggravating the community’s plight.
During the protest, a cross-section of the community, including citizens, shopkeepers, and transporters, voiced their grievances. They explained that the deteriorated road condition has not only made commuting difficult but has also adversely affected their businesses. The protesters have repeatedly sought attention to their predicament but claim their requests have been ignored by local authorities.
The demonstrators have called for immediate resurfacing of the road, installation of proper lighting, restrictions on heavy vehicle traffic during the day, and improvements in local sanitation services. They pointed out inconsistencies between the conditions on the ground and the Municipal Committee’s assertions of effective waste management.
The community’s frustration stems from the local authorities’ apparent disregard for the road’s maintenance, despite the clear impact on the residents’ health and economic well-being. They are now demanding immediate and decisive action to address these long-standing issues.
